Name Game

Matt, never one to boast, was proud to tell us that his name means "Gift of God". Rachel may have had second thoughts about telling the "macho row" what her name means. (Sorry Rachel...but you walked into that one-haha!)

The 8 B's

This week we focused on Christ's teachings when he gave the Sermon on the Mount. We discussed the Beatitudes and wrote goals to work on developing these characteristics. The 8 B's are: Blessed are the poor in spirit; Blessed are they that mourn; Blessed are the meek; Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness; Blessed are the merciful; Blessed are the pure in heart; Blessed are the peacemakers; Blessed are they which are persecuted.
We also learned how Christ taught us to pray and to serve God-not Mammon.

Elder L. Tom Perry

Thanks Jennifer for your devotional about Elder Perry today! We learned that he graduated from Utah State University. He likes to walk. His first wife passed away and then he remarried. He went on a mission to the Northern States and served 2 years with the Marines.

Aloha Stuart

The Laurels had a great time at mutual last night learning how to Hula Dance. Before class today, we tried to coax them into a short demo, but they weren't budging. Then Stuart volunteered and showed them how it was done!! Way to hula Stuart! :)

Nicole gave a great devotional today about Elder David A. Bednar. We learned that he was the quarterback of his high school. He went on a mission to Germany with the support of his non-member dad. When he got home from his mission, he was able to baptize his dad. Before becoming an apostle, he was the president of BYU-Idaho.

I'm THIRSTY!!

Kaity & Dallin got REALLY thirsty today after their cracker eating contest! We then read the story in John chapter 4 of Jesus asking the Samaritan woman for water at the well. We discussed how good it feels to have our thirst quenched and that Jesus offers living water...eternal life... so that we will never thirst.

The Wasp

Today we worked on Scripture Mastery and played this game called "Bloody Knuckles"...(sounds gory I know)...because supposedly after your team gets the scripture looked up and you run to the chalkboard to write down the reference, you're writing so fast you hit your knuckles on the chalkboard. However, I'm thinking of renaming the game to "The Wasp" because about halfway through the game, a certain player (blonde, cute, speedy) started "buzzing" around the chalkboard and erasing the opponents writing and being a bit "pesty!" The Wasp also snuck off with a piece of chalk, which Mckay luckily recovered! Anyway...as most of our games do, it got a little wild towards the end:) I think our posing Greek Gods even looked up to see what all the ruckus was about-(haha- I'm sure you know who they were!)

Visitors from an Ancient Land

Today our class was so surprised when some visitors from the old world came by to visit us. We met Zacharias, Elizabeth, Simeon and Anna. They told us all about themselves and we were able to learn more about John the Baptist and Jesus Christ because of them. We were also amazed at the resemblance they had to some of our class members...namely, Russell, Rachel, McKay and Tristain! WOW! They could have been related! We also learned about "Dr." Luke and his testimony of the Savior. We took turns reading letters from children to God and talked about how God always hears and answers our prayers. We said goodbye to our visitors and wished them well on the journey back home.
Zacharias and Elizabeth....parents of John the Baptist
Simeon and Anna....witnesses of the baby Jesus at the temple

Visit from "Flat Emma"

We took a quick stretching break to pose with our special visitor from Colorado "Flat Emma" (for those of you familiar with the "Flat Stanley" book series, you'll understand). Flat Emma (seated between Russell and Matt) had a great time in seminary today and will be heading back to Colorado tomorrow! Thanks for letting her come visit:)

More SM Craziness

Today we focused heavily on Scripture Mastery. Everyone received a ring of all 25 SM scriptures and were able to pass off at least 1 scripture today and many passed off multiple ones! We headed into the gym for a game that required more brain work....McKay started reading the scripture; chair 1 had to write down the reference; chair 2 had to write down key words; chair 3 had to look up the scripture and pass it off to the judges (Matt or Russell); and lastly chair 4 had to make a basket from the paper chair 1 and 2 passed to them. As usual...the competition runs high, but everyone is getting their scriptures down and it was a lot of FUN!!!

Surviving

So far this week we've been learning about the birth of Jesus Christ and how he prepared himself for his mission. We discussed the different authors of the gospels and how they wrote some similar and some different accounts about His life. Tues everyone had to match questions about the events of Christ's birth with the person in class who had the answer taped to their back. Wed we talked about Christ's baptism and also the Pharisees, Sadducees and Scribes. Today each table shared a scripture account of how fasting can give us extra spiritual strength. Nicole and Russell gave great insight on how fasting makes us disciplined and is also a sacrifice. On top of all that we are also working on our Scripture Mastery. Brother Northrup received a round of applause for reciting his 1st SM from Matthew 5 today! Way to go Brother Northrup!! Afterwards our class ended up being stranded on 2 deserted islands! But knowing their scripture mastery helped them to SURVIVE!!!! Our Fantasy Island group....Dallin, Rachel, Jennifer, Russell, Stuart, McKay and Kendra
The Gilligan's Island group.....Nicole, Natalie, Chantel, Rhiannon, Tristain, Deidre, Kaity and Matt. (I wonder who is Gilligan??-hahaha!!)
